Rally Islas Canarias replaces the Circuit of Ireland Rally on the ERC schedule for 2013. The asphalt stages use a mixture of narrow and fast undulating sections. The surface is abrasive meaning grip levels are high but tyre wear can be at a premium.

  • Delecour tips Breen

Delecour rates fast Breen for ERC success

Rising star Craig Breen continues to do no wrong. After impressing Peugeot Sport to the extent it charged him with testing its all-new 208 T16, Breen has now come to the attention of rallying legend François Delecour.

Delecour, 50, is a big fan of the 23-year-old from Ireland and expects him to be in the hunt for top honours when the FIA European Rally Championship resumes on Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés this week.

“The person who I’ve been really impressed by in the European championship so far is Craig Breen,” Delecour told the MAXRALLY website. “What he did on the [French championship] Rallye du Var, on his very first time there last year after just two passes on the recce, was simply astonishing. And then I had the chance to compete against him in Latvia recently and I could see again up close how fast he was. He’s someone who could be really challenging at the top next weekend.”
  • 'Kubica battle chance'

    Interview from fiaerc.com

Craig says he can’t wait to do battle with Robert Kubica when the Pole makes his FIA European Rally Championship debut on Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés next week.

Irishman Breen is one event into his nine-round ERC campaign in a Peugeot Rally Academy 207 Super 2000 and is on a high following a strong run to second place in Latvia last month (pictured).

He said: “It’s amazing for the profile of rallying and the championship that a guy like him is coming. The bloke’s won a Formula One race and it’s great to see him coming back after the injuries he suffered.”

Breen, who like Kubica has never competed in Gran Canaria before, reckons his rival’s turbocharged Citroën DS3 RRC might have a performance advantage over his normally-aspirated Peugeot, but didn’t sound overly concerned in an interview in British newspaper Motorsport News.

“I’m just relishing the chance to be battling against him,” said Breen. “He’s mad passionate about rallying and it’s great to have him with us.”
